'I would be giving up $1,200 in PTO': Guy conceals his resignation so that he can cash out $1,200 in PTO, causing controversy at the Thanksgiving dinner table

When you're little, the difference between ‘right’ and ‘wrong' is usually pretty clear. Stealing your friend's toy is wrong, but returning it to them is the right thing to do. However, playground rules don't apply when you're an adult and every black-and-white decision becomes muddled in a sea of grey.

‘You get what you asked for’: Doctor gives employee 5 days off every month for 1 year after company changes attendance policy

Attendance policy changes on the whim of every company once in a while, and HR may or may not fail to inform team leads of the modifications… The problem with that is when attendance policy changes and employees are unaware , they could get written up for not adhering to it, which in my book, is totally unfair. In this case, a worker who was employed at a Pharmaceutical manufacturing company for over 5 years had no idea that the company's attendance policy changed. During the 5 years, the worke…

'Calling me on a day off? Cha-ching!': IT employee gets called on his day off, finagles a 10 minute call to be 6 hours of PTO with 150% Overtime

Are you a full-time employee? Then we have a quick question for you: Have you thoroughly read your employee handbook? Many employees simply skim their employee handbook and don't read the fine print. Most of the wordage is to cover the derrière of the company, but it clearly states exactly what you are supposed to be earning. That means you are supposed to get paid for a minimum of 4 hours no matter what? You better charge that 10-minute call as if it were 4 hours. That is exactly what this tec…

After a Particularly Lengthy Bathroom Break a Boss Forces His Employee to Take PTO to Cover Time Lost; Hilarity Ensues in the Comments

When nature calls, nature's calling. There's nothing you can do to stop it. Except, apparently some companies have found a way to wield their money-grubbing powers against employees whose bowels act first and ask questions later.

'It's going on [your] permanent record': Manager threatens their employee after illegally revoking their PTO pay; outraged worker quits, gets their masters degree, and moves on to greener pastures

Toxic work environments usually start with a totalitarian manager. Although managers are a necessary evil in the workplace, they sometimes overstep the boundaries on reasonable requests. The Lordly Dukes of Management usually think that their employees are just peasants living in a Feudal system of their own making...

'I think I'll give my notice early': Employee sabotages her insufferable coworker's PTO, quitting just 2 weeks before she leaves for vacation

Working for a small company means that there are very few employees to cover the basics of operations. You lean on each other when your fellow workers take PTO and it's common courtesy to make yourself overly available, pulling your coworker's slack when they're unable to do their work. For some, this business model works fantastically, fulfilling every CEO's “family” fantasy, but more often than not, small companies can harbor hostile cubicle conditions, making colleagues turn on each other.

‘Go to HR, then’: Boss refuses to give worker 1 week PTO to spend time with newborn baby due to being 'shortstaffed', worker counters by filing for 12 weeks paternity leave

One boss was forced to sheepishly backtrack after initially refusing to give a worker one week off once their wife gave birth to their newborn baby. Management really outdid themselves with this one… It seems ridiculously unfair to think that some bosses will not willingly give their workers requested time off, especially when it is well within the workers' rights to receive it. In this case, u/P4ddyC4ke, the OP, told the story of when his boss told him that because they were short-staffed, OP…

'I'm suddenly feeling feverish': EMT gives his 2-week notice then learns he will be shorted PTO, uses all of his sick days in his final two weeks

According to the Feds, employees are only allowed to get sick 3 days out of the year. At least, PTO and sick leave is intentionally convoluted and in America, some people actually feel guilty taking sick days (even when they ARE sick) because they have that vacation to Bermuda later in the year that they're saving those days for. But doesn't that defeat the purpose of a sick day? We should just call it what it really is: Floater days where you're paid to not work.

'Win win for [me], not the company': Consultant finagles freebee PTO days when manager insist they work on impossible days

Sometimes managers can be a little… ditzy, to say the least. They request things from their employees that are not even possible. And that's exactly what happened to this consultant who posted their story on Reddit . This OP was working as a consultant at a firm they very much enjoyed. They had a pretty good relationship with their manager, so when they requested time off to travel, they didn't think there would be an issue. And initially, there wasn't. However, three days before they were supp…

'I had the plague': Sick teacher forced to come into work after calling out sick; admin thought they called her bluff but were horrified by her arrival

It seems like managers are always skeptical about whether or not their employees are actually sick. Perhaps it's a worker's inherent guilt of leaving your team in a bind with your absence, but most likely it's because managers don't trust their staff. Truth is, most people only have a handful of PTO to use per year, so workers would rather show up ill to the office once or twice a year instead of forgoing their 2 week trip to Bermuda.

Any time you take a stand against your company, it feels like standing up to the elementary school bully. Sure, maybe they had a growth spurt before everybody else, but that doesn't make them the boss of me! However, in the adult world, things are a lot more complicated and it's not as simple as telling the bully that you're going to give them a wedgie in front of the whole class.
