Just throw this one on top of the mountain of reasons not to go to Australia. Unless you love spiders so big they have souls, then go for it. The amazing feature here is that amazingly, no one is screaming about the massive, terrified spider scrabbling around inches above everyone's heads. Regular people get in car accidents because they saw a bee, so the fact that they landed fine with a monster in the cockpit is a testament to that excellent pilot focus everyone's always talking about.

Animals That Are Way More Dangerous Than They Seem

Just because something is an herbivore doesn't mean it won't break you in half like a twig. Just because something was nice in a cartoon doesn't mean it won't eat your face. And just because something is small doesn't mean it can't stab you. Not only are cows, chickens and otters more deadly than they seem. There are loads of things that are surprisingly dangerous, like grapefruit juice and garage door springs. Take it from this zookeeper insider knowledge, every animal can be a hassle.

Australia is widely known as a land of mortifying nopes, but usually those nopes come in the form of giant lizards and horrifying spiders. In this case, it's believed some heavy rains brought on an extra big helping of mice in agricultural parts of the country. Some farms basically have moving outdoor carpeting now. Who knows if those mortifying nopes will move in on the action.

Knowing that this thing is walking around, it makes a little more sense that chickens are distantly related to T-Rexes. Dang, that bird is so big it belongs on Sesame Street. Are we sure this behemoth isn't just an ostrich?

It probably goes without saying that it's a bad idea to disturb a rattlesnake. What's amazing is how quickly this innocuous situation turns into a moment of stomach-dropping, primal fear. All those flags make a little more sense now.

Who cares what these people were trying to film. That spider has some fantastic timing. And to be fair, most of us would freak out to some degree if we saw that on the ceiling while driving. Also, despite the pandemonium, great work keeping the spider in frame.

Majestic Atrocities of the Australian Natural World

It's no secret that Australian wildlife runs the gamut of alien, to huge, to venomous, to dangerous, to huge again, to just plain freaky. It's a good reminder that most of us don't have to check our shoes for snakes, or run the risk of stepping on a spider that's so big it should pay rent. For some more scariness, here are ominous signs that speak the language of fear.

The bluntnose sixgill shark is an ancient deep sea predator. Like it's been around since before most dinosaurs. They average between 3.1 to 4.2 meters (10 to 14 ft) long but can get up to 8 meters (26 ft) long. This crew of scientists got a good look at one. These group is also credited with being the first ever to tag an animal from a submarine. Look at that eye roll into the back of it's head.
