The Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico collapsed and shattered in a disheartening moment for astrophysicists everywhere. The main cables holding up the massive 900 ton receiver failed and the whole thing collapsed into the Gregorian dome. Groups are focusing on getting funds from the U.S. Congress to rebuild the observatory.
Here's a bunch of scheduled demolitions of various water towers. In most cases, they fall in the intended direction. Some explode, some fall in a heap, and some manage to stay together amazingly well. It's kinda awesome.
Thousands of students were gathered together in green for a "St. Fratty's Day" party at California Polytechnic State University. In the video you can see many people standing on roofs, exemplifying the poor judgment of drunken college students. That's all fine until one roof just couldn't take the weight and crashed to the ground, taking several unlucky students with it.

Firefighters responded to the situation and shared this photo of the aftermath. Some people were taken to the hospital but no one died.

According to FOX6NOW, everyone is ok, but one person sustained a particularily nasty injury:
The city said in a statement that in the most serious injury, a person’s thigh was impaled by a piece of debris early Saturday. At least seven others were treated for cuts and bruises. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
One man died and several more remain injured after a crane collapsed into a car show Aug. 1.
The pedestrian-lifting crane hurt more than 20 people, seven of them children, and caused the death of a 48-year-old man. There's still very little known about what caused the collapse.
According to CNN's story on the structural disaster:
The crane had been one of the main attractions at the festival for classic car aficionados in Oosertwolde, having been used to elevate a platform so visitors could enjoy the view, a press officer with the national police in east Netherlands region explained.
Authorities are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. What they do know is that 10 people were taken to a nearby hospital after the collapse, two of them in serious condition, police said.
CNN claims that only 10 were injured, but Pulse.ng has the number at 20.
The annual event takes place in Oosertwolde, about 55 miles east of Amsterdam.
