1. The bacteria aren't actually eating your flesh. The various species—including some that cause strep and staph—enter a wound, scrape, or bug bite and unleash a flood of toxic chemicals that kill surrounding tissue cells.

2. At least 650 cases crop up each year in the US—and about a quarter prove fatal. Flesh-eating bacteria have claimed the life of particle physicist Alexandru Marin, a chunk of the right leg of science fiction writer/marine biologist Peter Watts, and some of Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman's right arm.

High school students in Hawkins County, Tennessee were served up some 6-year old pork last week for lunch, and while no one has gotten sick yet, the news is not sitting well with anyone.

A cook at a local primary school (who didn’t serve the meat) sent a photo of the pork to a city commissioner named Michael Herrell, who discovered that it had also been distributed to several other schools in the area.

Cafeteria workers at Cherokee High School said “that it smelled so bad they made gravy to put over the meat,” according to News Channel 11.

And at another high school the smell was apparently so bad that it reportedly stunk up the halls.

Despite the putrid meat being so old and smelly, some students “even came back for seconds,” according to WISH TV.

Which is mildly disturbing.

A rep from the USDA told Yahoo that there probably wasn’t any danger in eating it, but it “should be consumed within four to 12 months of freezing.”

The director of schools, Steve Starnes, has since ordered that an inventory be taken of all the food in the freezers, although you think that sort of thing would have already been in place.

Twitter Thread Exposing Fish Fraud Is Both Eye-Opening & Revolting

We've got some seriously bad news for fish-lovers. According to a report from nonprofit Oceana, over 20% of 449 fish that they tested were mislabeled, exposing some pretty serious "fish fraud." This is a staggering percentage, especially when considering that less than 1% of fish is tested for fraud. There's a huge chance that the expensive fish you're ordering while dining out is cheap - or even, according to this related Twitter thread from a biology professor, dangerous. There are fish out there that will hurt you to eat. And, as @AwesomeBioTA's class discovered, some of this "fish" is almost too disgusting for words.

Eye-opening twitter thread about professor doing a class on fish fraud.
