Folk band Bon Iver scored a Grammy for Best Alternative Artist and Best New Artist last night. Unfortunately, most Grammy viewers had never heard of Bon Iver before, or its frontman, Justin Vernon. Thousands took to Twitter to complain that "Bonny Bear" won over Nicki Minaj or J. Cole ("ugh, you mean i have to hear about someone who isn't rap or r&b?"), or to rag on Justin Vernon's homely haircut and corduroy outfit ("his style sux omg who cares about the music").
You can read more of the confusion and outrage at the Who Is Bon Iver Tumblr.
Alright now, at what point does lampooning hipsters become its own form of hipster cynicism? How many non-indie bands have names that do NOT fall into one of these categories? I suppose Igor Stravinsky was guilty of going for that ultra-sensitive, alt-country-ish vibe.
Who did it better? The person who made this alt/indie version, or person who did the '70s and '80s classic rock version? DISCUSS.
