A Plains Township, PA woman celebrated her 100th birthday says the secret to a long life is literally in the bottle.

James Gilpin is a designer and researcher who works on the implementation of new biomedical technologies. He's also got type 1 diabetes, where his body doesn't produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.

So he's started a project which turns the sugar-rich urine of elderly diabetics into a high-end single malt whisky, suitable for export.

The source material is acquired from elderly volunteers, including Gilpin's own grandmother. The urine is purified in the same way as mains water is purified, with the sugar molecules removed and added to the mash stock to accelerate the whisky's fermentation process. Traditionally, that sugar would be made from the starches in the mash.

81 year old Elvira Montes didn't just complete the annual Flotrack Beer Mile, she dominated it. The grandmother of three completed her beer mile, which requires runners to chug a 12 oz beer every quarter mile, in 20 minutes and 23 seconds, beating her 47 year old daughter by 50 seconds. 

Montes was happy to finish, but wants to up her chug speed in order to try to beat her time next year: "I should have been a little faster. I tried to drink the first one really fast but I couldn’t. The second one went down really smooth; the third, even better. The fourth was alright."

But the coolest thing about Montes? She doesn't even like beer. This badass grandma prefers scotch. Cheers to you Elvira Montes, and congrats on a great finish time. I know I couldn't beat it.
