If you aren't familiar with the historic Brexit vote that's about to take place, here's the gist: British voters will soon decide if they want the United Kingdom to remain in or leave the European Union. It's kind of a big deal, but who cares what humans think, right? The cats have spoken and they are very much against "the British exit".

The clip above aired Thursday night on The Daily Show, a relatively innocuous joke about the fanaticism of a vocal group of fans of the boy band. Fans, however, took it as an insult against One Direction member Zayn Malik - who is of Pakistani descent. By Friday, angry fans had hashtags globally trending on Twitter:



Not seen here? #ZaynDefenseSquad, #ZayneSavesNotKills, and other smaller hashtags throughout the day - which our friends at Know Your Meme have kindly gathered up! Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports that over 114,000 tweets have been tallied under the popular hashtags.

The moral of the story, as always, is to never underestimate the power of teenage girls on social media.

Olympian swimmer Ryan Lochte isn't known for being particularly articulate, or even for forming complete sentences, and his Twitter account doesn't do much to dispel that perception. But some of his finest tweets, when formatted in Impact Bold, made us seriously wonder whether Lochte doesn't put much effort into the English language, or if he's actually an undercover Zen Buddhist.
