'It was very awkward': Couple ditches double date after other couple shows up extra late

Time is one of your most valuable possessions, but not everyone values it the same amount. Take this couple for example: they're chronically late , and aren't about to improve things any time soon. When a couple shared their experience with a double date gone wrong, it sparked a conversation about what it means to be late to every event. Some people will tell you that it's just how they are. They're always late to everything, despite their best efforts. Lateness also bothers some people more th…

‘My boss is shorting my tips’: Server quits after finding out employer is shorting their tips under the guise of decreasing hourly rate

Employers don't always exactly abide by the law; some refuse tax forms in favor of under-the-table pay, which is really bad for servers in the long run. In this case, OP was working at a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant that served authentic Thai food. According to OP, her boss was actually pretty nice, but soon enough, OP realized that may not be the case. It began with less pay than usual, which OP found suspicious. OP approached their boss and asked for a tax form, which was refused upon re…

'There was a queue of people waiting to be seated!': Entitled customers think they don't have to wait like everyone else

To echo some of the sentiments expressed in this post, it's important to remember that members of every generation can be just as entitled as the next—by no means does one generation have a monopoly in entitlement. The baby boomers have their “Karens,” we millennials have our "Heathers," and Gen-Z has, well, whatever they have. (Madison?) There's a reason why you need to constantly be on your guard when working in the service industry, and that's because you never know where your next encounter…

'I waited on the devil himself': Demanding customer leaves surprising tip for waiter

A waiter shared an odd day in their life: dealing with some of the silliest and most demanding customers . Servers of America, you have my sympathies. It seems like customers are crazier than ever — but at least these waiters know they aren't alone in the war against Karens. On r/Serverlife, u/serverforadecade shared an encounter with one couple who kept them running all over the restaurant to fetch them things and wait on them hand and foot. In the comments, people broke down the servers' bull…

Top Non-Money Tips Servers Get From Customers

Top Non-Money Tips Servers Get From Customers

The customer service industry is unpredictable; customers range from super kind, to average, to complete wacko human beings. Servers often encounter a variety of strange, weird, odd, and unexpected situations, some of them being the tip that people leave when they are done with their meal. Apparently, not everyone leaves 15%, or any money at all… some customers prefer to leave some pretty strange, unconventional things instead. As we have worked in the service industry, we can vouch for the fac…

'Most people wouldn't behave like this': Local celebrity gorges on free food at restaurant that sponsors him, cuts the line, and refuses to tip servers

This server isn't holding back — they're spilling some piping hot tea about a local celebrity who's acting like a jerk at their restaurant. This VIP is drunk on power, as the OP, u/Capnmcquacken, shared to r/TalesFromYourServer. As the fed-up server writes, the restaurant they work at is a super popular taco spot in Michigan. They have tons of customers, and they also sponsor a race car driver, who the OP calls Randy. He's allowed to eat for free at this restaurant whenever he pleases, and he's…

'Don't tell me that is mashed potatoes': 20 Amateur chefs who cooked with creativity

Recipes are great for some, but some chefs prefer to freestyle their meals. I'm fully on team recipe, mainly because when I try to cook without one, my dish turns out just awful . I trust the random cooks of the internet when I make my meals — mostly because I actually had a physical cookbook, and everything I made with it turned out wrong. This cookbook had me making soggy and inedible french toast, and another time, it steered me into making the most watery pancakes I've ever witnessed. They…

'Coming right up!': Karen foolishly demands butter chicken dish without spice

When the dish you order is specifically known and named for the style of spice that it uses, it would be foolish to request that dish without it. Sure, you might have meant that you just wanted it to be less spicy, but if you're going to be rude to service staff, you should be careful what you wish for and choose your words carefully. Or, how about we treat service staff with the respect that they deserve? This Karen unwisely demanded exactly this after being rude to staff during her trip to th…

'I just rage quit my waitressing job': Server finds out her boss was stealing her tips, quits on the spot and seeks legal action

Most people start a career as a waiter or waitress because of the money. It's no secret that servers make bank, but it's definitely not because of their minimum wage hourly rate, it's because the tipping culture in America says it's acceptable (if not encouraged) to tip 25%+ to the server on top of a restaurant receipt. So for servers who aren't making tips, why would you suffer the long hours, picky customers, and weekend enslavement? Exactly. You wouldn't.

'I regret my two weeks notice': Server faces backlash from coworkers after quitting

Toxic organizations breed toxic behavior, begetting toxic people. Unfortunately, those that conform to the organization's less-than-ideal ideals tend to do better and prosper, rising far above their deserved rank and encouraging their unfavorable behavior towards others that would ideally be derided. We've seen stories like this before, where an employee is singled out and collectively gaslit by their coworkers on behalf of getting them to conform to bizarre organizational directives. In this c…
