Evan Young of Longmont, Colorado was banned from making his valedictorian speech at his own graduation from Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School. He submitted a draft of the speech to administrators and then provided them a revised speech where he made all the changes they asked for but one. He had planned to come out as gay during the speech but the school would not permit him to include any references to his sexual orientation. The principal then called Young's parents about the issue, outing him without his consent in the process.
Ultimately, Young was not allowed to speak at his graduation. He did get the chance to deliver his speech after all at a fundraising event for Out Boulder, a Colorado LGBT advocacy group and on national television on The Nightly Show.
Caitlyn Jenner introduced herself to the world on Monday by appearing on the cover of “Vanity Fair,” breaking the internet and winning practically everyone over with her new look.
And on Tuesday Mike Huckabee also started making waves online… for being a total creep.
At the National Religious Broadcasters Convention back in February, the former Arkansas governor was discussing the issue of gender identity, when he made an offensive joke that mocked people who are transgender.
“Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” he said. “I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.'”
World Net Daily uploaded the video to YouTube this past weekend, so it just started to get national attention this week.
Any sliver of a chance he had a becoming president just went down the drain with that punchline.
Meanwhile on Twitter, the Huckabee jokes are top notch.
A mother in India recently placed a matrimonial ad in the paper for her adult, gay son. It might seem like it would only be a little embarrassing for 36 year old activist Harish Iyer to have his mom get involved in his love life but it's actually groundbreaking. It is thought to be the first same-sex dating ad placed in an Indian newspaper. In fact many papers refused to publish it.
Iyer told the Times of India that they've gotten a few responses so far but he plans on taking his time to decide on the right man.
A Michigan pastor named Rev. Matthew Makela (who is married with 5 kids) resigned this week from St. John’s Lutheran Church after he was caught cruising Grindr for men.
An anonymous source sent some screenshots of some of his chats to the gay news site Queerty, who exposed his hypocrisy to the church as well as the rest of the world.
In the conversations, he says he “loves making out naked,” “oral and massage,” and he reveals that he is a “top.”
Of course he probably just meant “top Biblical scholar,” right?
As Queerty points out, outing his private gay sex life is important here, as he has been an outspoken, anti-gay voice in his church and online.
He has compared being gay to being an alcoholic, and accused the transgender movement of assisting “opportunistic sickos.”
If Makela made even one LGBT kid at St. John’s “Christ-based” elementary school, their parents, friends, family or anyone who ever stepped foot in the church feel like being true to yourself is shameful (and it seems all too likely that he did), then we’re glad to share his hypocrisy with the world.
“The details of sin that have been kept confidential are being posted online by those who seek to do harm to the Makela family and to St. John’s,” writes Rev. Daniel Kempin. “This is taking an already difficult situation and making it even more painful.”
