In south Brazzaville, Congo, live members of the fashion subculture Sape (an acronym for Société des Ambianceurs et Persons Élégants). Sapeurs, as they are known, dress in Gucci and Prada to look like 1930s gangsters. Although Sapeurs live in poverty-stricken shantytowns, they pay for their pricey duds by working several jobs, scrimping on day-to-day living, saving up for years, and a variety of other means of income. The subculture is strongly tied to anti-war sentiment in a region with a history of civil war. Read more about the Sapeurs here.
