The 2012 Olympics kicked off in London, and they couldn't have crammed more snippets of U.K. hits into their musical montage if they had tried.
Wondering which alt-rock riff they crammed between Blur and Muse, or which bygone hit of 1967 they played between Mud and David Bowie? Have no fear! YouTube user tisyupaperpoet helpfully compiled a playlist of the songs played during the opening ceremony.

Britain's Got Talent churned out another unlikely-looking pop star last week when the pop-slash-opera, don't-call-us-Josh-Groban duo Charlotte and Jonathan performed. Their debut (specifically Jonathan's) mirrored that of Susan Boyle's in 2009: unknown contestant walks onstage looking less than groomed and plasticized to the standards of a pop star, unknown contestant opens mouth and blows everyone away with supreme singing abilities, audience bursts into tears and can barely contain themselves. There's a nice twist at the end where Simon tries to tempt Jonathan into backstabbing his partner.
Queen Elizabeth's jubilee celebration took place this week. To give you some perspective, she ascended the throne in 1952, long before luminescent truncheons (what you silly Americans call "glow sticks") became the vogue. She was probably hoping there'd be more spaceships by now.
